Wrinkles Q & A

What causes wrinkles?

Years of sun exposure, smoking, and making your usual facial expressions can lead to facial wrinkles, especially as you get older. As part of the natural aging process, your skin becomes thinner, drier, and less elastic. It doesn’t recover from damage as easily as it did in younger days, so the effects appear as visible lines, creases, folds, and wrinkles across your forehead, around your eyes, and around your nose and mouth.

Is it possible to prevent wrinkles from forming or getting worse?

Protecting your skin from the sun’s harmful rays is one of the best things you can do to prevent future wrinkles. Wearing sunscreen and makeup with built-in sunscreen is also a good idea, as is using a high-quality moisturizer every day. And, there are many health reasons for quitting smoking, but giving up tobacco can also help improve the tone and texture of your skin.

How do I reduce the appearance of wrinkles I already have?

Dr. LeBel and her trained laser aesthetician offer several options for reducing wrinkles and making your skin appear younger and smoother. The Icon® aesthetic system can reduce fine lines and wrinkles on your face through the power of laser energy. During this noninvasive approach to wrinkles, the Icon laser sends pulses of light below the surface of your skin to treat the underlying support structure.

When the laser energy triggers your skin’s natural healing process, your skin creates new collagen and elastin to rebuild structure from the inside out. The new cells rebuild your skin tissue with a more even texture and tone for a smoother appearance and fewer visible lines and wrinkles.

Dr. LeBel also offers Botox® injections to temporarily paralyze the muscles that lead to wrinkles from repeated facial expressions. And she provides the Juvéderm® family of dermal fillers to plump up skin and rejuvenate your appearance for a smoother, firmer tone. If you’re looking to resurface damaged skin, the Fractora™ fractional radio-frequency treatment can improve your skin tone and texture for a more radiant overall appearance.

How does the Fractora treatment work?

Fractora radiofrequency (RF) treatments deliver energy through tiny pins that produce concentrated heat and micro-punctures in the treatment area. The heat is gentle enough so it won’t damage your skin but effective enough to penetrate into deeper layers of tissue to stimulate new collagen production. Since the pins create scattered micro-lesions on your skin, you heal faster than with other ablative procedures.

Fractora treatments improve the appearance of:

  • Fine lines
  • Deep lines
  • Skin texture
  • Pigment irregularities
  • Blood vessels and redness

Your skin often appears firmer, lifted and brighter after Fractora treatments.

Dr. LeBel recommends that you continue to keep your skin healthy after any treatment, so she offers Obagi® Medical skin care products for a variety of skin concerns, including:

  • Lines and wrinkles
  • Dry skin
  • Acne and blemishes
  • Tone and texture
